    66 427/390 exhaust manifold

Can someone advise as to whether the exhaust manifold was painted chevy orange on the 1966 427/390? Thank you.

    Jay-----

The big block manifolds were installed on the engine when the engine was painted. Usually, there is engine paint seen on the upper portion of the manifolds near the cylinder head, except aluminum heads. The degree of paint application to the manifolds varied, apparently a function of the painter. Sometimes, virtually the entire manifold is painted; sometimes just a very small amount near the cylinder heads and just about everything in between.

And the block paint is missing under the manifold. *NM*

Yes, mostly it usually is. Some gets through the "gaps" between the big block exhaust runners, though.

Imagine,if you will, that guy at Tonowanda who spray painted your motor the very first time. The guns shoot a pattern about two feet wide, because its quicker, and that employee probobly has been told by his fellow employees not to do too good a job. They dont want thier own work to look worse.Uniform mediocraty, dont you know!Basicly,I believe, from looking at the original paint motors Ive seen over the years,it looks like that painter made about five passes with the gun.Front, both sides, rear, and bottom.Bam,its done. You really cant blame em.They did build a great motor, with or without the paint!!!!!!!!!Bill S
