Gas tank anti squeek material

I will be purchasing new fuel tank straps for my 68 and in looking at the anti squeek material on my old straps was curious as to the materials used.

Am I wrong, or is this just glorified asphalt tar paper only thicker?

Is it fuel resistant?

The originals are so shot that I don't have alot to go on.

Hi! I used 30LB roofing felt. I still have a large section; if you email me your address I will send you some.

The original material on my '65 was much thicker than 30# felt.

I went to my local roofing supply, told them that it was for a Corvette restoration, and the guy said "help yourself to as big a piece as you need!"

The 90# was a perfect match.

When I repaired the leak in my 66 gas tank I replaced the original material with a doubled up layer of standard (whatever that weight is) roofing felt. It worked great and was cheap since the local construction site was more than happy to allow me to take what I needed.

Standard roofing felt is 15LB; I believe 90lb is more like rolled roofing material or a heavy felt used in built-up roof systems. Mike, are you sure you used 90LB felt? When I restored my 65 the tank strap liner seemed to be identical to 30LB felt.

Ray et al: I referred to it as 90# felt because that's what the guy at the roofing supply called it. Could be less, maybe 60#. It is approx. .100" thick, which matches what was on my '65 (glued to the tank, not the frame).
It's entirely possible that this original material had expanded significantly with age, I suppose. But this really thick felt I found was almost a perfect match, so I went with it. Provides a great cushion and looks substantial.
The stuff sold by my favorite Corvette supplier was ridiculously thin, I seemed to me. ---MAG
