    '69 Muncie speedo gear clip...

Just how does that little devil insert into the plastic gear on the tail shaft?
I think it is 1969 only that used the plastic gear and clip. Thanks.

The nylon speedometer DRIVE gears were used on ALL 1968-70 Muncie transmissions. The clip can be installed in a variety of ways that are not so easy to explain in writing. However, I suggest that you insert the "tang" in the clip into the orifice on the main shaft speedo gear surface designed to accept it. Then, slide the groove in the speedo drive gear over the clip. You will feel it "snap" into place. Then, test the gear to make sure that it's secure by trying to move it on the shaft. It should be held reasonably firm by the clip.

One thing to keep in mind: ONLY 1968-70 original Muncie main shafts and all 65-70 SERVICE main shafts sold after 1968 have the provisions on the shaft for the clip. Earlier mainshafts can be retrofitted to 68-70 Muncies but if this is done, then the 63-67 style steel DRIVE gear must be used. You CANNOT install a nylon DRIVE gear on a shaft without provisions for the clip. You CAN install a 63-67 style steel DRIVE gear, though, on a 68-70 mainshaft.

By the way, should you or anyone need one, this VERY special clip is still available from GM. It's GM #1373122 and it currently GM lists for $4.98/each.

Some of the more knowledgeable Muncie transmission suppliers/rebuilders could likely provide this clip, too. However, if you went into ANY GM dealer parts department and asked for it, I'll bet that there's not a single one in the country that could come up with this part number. NOT A SINGLE ONE!

If anyone needs one of these I have one. When I broke one, I got two and only needed one. (not for sale - you can have it).

I'd recommend that you hang onto it. It's small and doesn't take up much space. Someday, you might need another one. You don't think that GM is going to have this piece available forever, do you?
