    Re: 72 IRS problem

How about the French locks ? Are those in? Do you have heavy duty or standard end caps? Any slop there ? I'm just going through the components and can't think of anywhere else to look....flange holes out of round ?? spindle stud loose ?

STD end caps. Didn't see any play there, but I'll check when I take the half shafts out.
      French locks new and installed.
If the holes are out of round, they weren't like that when I took it apart.
Spindle nut will be checked later today.
      Thanks for all the replies!

          Re: 72 IRS problem

I just removed the half shaft from the pass side, and there is no play at all in the U joint that I can see of feel. There doesn't seem to be any bind, or rough movement in them either. I also checked for play at the spindle and it seems tight.
I'm going to retorque the spindle nut and see if that is OK.
Could it be the rear sprong? I rebuilt it last winter at the same time as the T arms using GM liners. I didn't use any lube between the leaves.
          Any ideas? I'm stumped!!

Re: Now I can get on! How about this

            Couldn't respond earlier.

Maybe you have a diff. noise resonating out from the pumpkin through the drivelines to the spindle assemblies? Hense the noise on both sides.

Inside wheel weights hitting brake assembly? Had this problem on a 1979.

That's what I was thinking when I mentioned the posi unit. Seems like they're known for a little clicking noise when the lube breaks down. Unless I'm thinking about my exwife ;-)

Re: Now I can get on! How about this

Well, it sure sounds like its right inside the wheels Chcuk.
I bought new GM diffy oil and 2 bottles of additive, and I'll try that next.
Today I removed the pass side half shaft, and the U joints look and feel good. I removed the spindle nut, and the splines are clean and tight. The rotor spins freely without any noise, movement or binding. I'm begining to think its something external, like the spring or something. I can rock the car while its parked and it will make this clicking noise everytime the driveline is loaded in either direction.

Re: I guess it could be the spring

I think I would completely free up the diff. and give it a spin or two to see if the noise eminates from the diff. or not. At least you can narrow down the possibilities even further.

Easy for me to say huh? "Just tear your car apart George"

Is the snubber cushion assembly fresh? It does want to flex one way or the other when the driveline is loaded.

I'll set in the cheap seats now and be quiet.

The pinion snubber is original Chuck and someone else suggested I look at it. I have it on the to do list. I'm just too tired to work on it anymore tonight.
