    Mike,

The drivetrain combination you have is a favorite of mine and without going for a drive with you it is very hard to give advice. I would make sure that the clutch is properly adjusted. Outside of that you say it finds the gears fine so I can't suggest anything else mechanical. You might want to let someone else drive it and see how they do.

      Mike,

I think I have nearly the same setup on my 65 coupe but I don't witness your problems. (I have a different Holley 2818 carb and distributor because my is a 65, but I think we have the same cam, intake manifold, Hurst linkage, rear-end and close ratio trans). A couple of things to note about your engine (assuming that you have the 30-30 solid lifter cam) L76:

      1. This engine does not produce alot of low end power. It comes alive above 3,700 rpm. This specific engine, the gearing, the close ratio trans... were all designed for track racing... to keep the car in an optimal rpm range at all times (regardless of gear). You'll find that this engine will rev...rev...rev... with little/no valve float (even past 7000 rpm!!).

      2. The car should drive fine... and should not be completely "gutless" at low rpms. I wonder if your problems are not ignition (or carb) related?

What do you mean by "when I let out the clutch, I am at the wrong RPMs" ? Where are you usually shifting from 1-->2, 2-->3, 3-->4 for normal driving?

      cheers,
      Dennis

well i took the car out for a little drive tonite and i had some success. i had been shifting at about 2500 rpms before. like i said, i was trying to take it easy.

well i noticed the car shifts very nicely at about 3500 rpms. i think its just a matter of me getting used to the feel of the car.

however, the car hesitates on startup when i let out the clutch too fast, not like its going to stall, its like its not getting gas or something?

i am amazed at how well this car handles and accelerates.

          Dennis:

Mike's engine has the older "Duntov" camshaft. The 30-30 was used in 64-65 L76/L84 applications.

            Mike,

Either give it more gas when starting out when letting the clutch out in the manner you described or try increasing the volume of the pump shot by adjusting the acc pump on the carb.

              Mike

If you like the way it shifts at 3500 rpm, just wait tell you try it in all four gears at 6500. When I work up the courage, I do this occasionally with my 64 365 e/w the 30-30 cam and off road exhaust. WOW what a sound and ride.
