Replacement brake shoe's for 60 big brake

Until I can find the right brake shoes for a 60 big brake car, what could I use as a replacement? This car has the big finned drums. I thought someone told me year's ago that a certain year Olds would work. Any help much appreciated. john

If you have the original, you might be able to have them relined? Maybe you don't have them? Terry

The original brake shoes used for 57-62 Corvettes with HD brakes were GM #3745221, front, and GM #3745223, rear. These were 11 X 2-1/2" shoes with bonded Cerrometallic lining. I'm not sure if these shoes were ever used on any other GM cars other than Corvettes. However, they MAY have been used on some pre-1963 Oldsmobiles, too.

In 1965, the 3745221 front shoes were discontinued and were replaced by GM #3798310 and in 1968 the 3745223 rear shoes were discontinued and replaced by GM #3798312. The 3798310 and 3798312 were DEFINITELY used on some Oldsmobile models, but I can't tell you which ones or which years. I fully expect that they were pre-63 models, though.

Regardless of which Oldsmobile models that these brakes were used on, they are no longer available from GM or any aftermarket supplier that I know of for either Oldsmobiles or Corvettes. I expect the supply of pre-63 Oldsmobiles is now pretty limited in most wrecking yards and those that do exist with these brakes likely have been fully "mined" and are now "played out". Nevertheless, it might be a source worth following up on. Perhaps, early Oldsmobile afficionados could provide more info.

        John,
As mentioned, late 50s-early 60s Olds front shoes are a direct bolt on fit (2 1/2in) for the 57-62 Vette HD brakes. The HD rear shoes are 2in (same as standard front shoes).
I just recently bought a set of 2 1/2in Olds front shoes from my local O'Reillys parts store. Unless they have just recently been discontinued, they should be available from several parts stores, to include NAPA. This is the setup I use on my 56 with "home made" HD brakes. Works fine. Nevertheless, if you can locate an early Olds in a salvage which still has the brake shoes (regardless of condition), you should be able to have them re-lined by any competant brake rebuilder.

          OK John,
I just called my local O'Reilly and NAPA stores.
The 54-63 Olds front brake shoes are still available (2 1/2 x 11).
The O'Reilly part number is 160 and the O'Reilly warehouse in Okla City has 2 sets in stock.
The NAPA part number is TS160 and the Dallas warehouse has them in stock.
So, you can still get them.
