I am replacing all of my brake components (springs etc.) along with my brake drums. Does it make a difference about the spring around my front drums. I can't find anyone that sells drums with the spring groove in them. I can't find mention of it anywhere. Many thanks.

The purpose of the circumferential springs was, supposedly, to reduce brake "noise" (squeal). Just how effective they were at this is questionable. From a functional perspective, you don't need these springs. However, for NCRS/NCCB judging, the springs may have some benefit. So, if the latter is important for you, then you can obtain the springs and install them for judged events; perhaps the judges will not notice that the spring grooves are missing from the drums. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Ditto what Joe said about function. The springs cannot be seen in normal judging configuration. It MIGHT be possible to run your hand between the wheel and drum to determine if the springs are there "by feel", but I've never seen this done, and there is nothing in the JG about the drum "anti-squeak springs."
