    68 Clutch Pedal question

The clutch pedal on my 68 with 4 speed trans sits very high in relation to the brake pedal.
All parts are factory original and new. I tried to follow the adjustment procedure in the AIM but when I get the pedal positioned to where I think it should be then the clutch does not completely disengage. When the pedal is adjusted to where the clutch works properly, then the pedal sits to high and is very close to the bottom of the dash panel.
What am I doing wrong and what do I need to do to have the two pedals (clutch and brake) reasonably lined up. I know the clutch pedal should be slightly higher than the brake but not as high as mine is.
Thank you for any thoughts or suggestions.

Kurt, I have a '69 4 speed and the clutch pedal in it is a good 3 to 3 1/2 inches abve the brake pedal. Standard brakes on our car. What do you call too high?

Kurt I know you had your car all apart for the work you have done and I won't be home until late tonight to look at my 68, but is it possible that the clutch bar between the frame and engine is 180 out? Without being able to look at my 68 I "remember" that the standard brake and clutch pedal are about the same height. For sure my clutch pedal is not as high as you describe yours.

        David,
I just measured and the difference between my brake pedal and my clutch pedal is exactly 4 inches. Doesn't that seem excessive?

          Jim,
I installed the clutch cross shsaft as illustrated in the AIM.
I was unaware that the shaft could be installed more than one way.

Kurt I just examined my 68. The clutch pedal is a little above the brake pedal. If you push on the clutch pedal to take up the end play, the clutch and brake pedal are at the same height. Looking at the clutch bar that connects to the frame and the engine I noticed the two holes that two springs connect to are the clutch bar. The spring on the top connects to the bar lever at the greatest distance of the two from the adjustable clutch rod going to the clutch pedal. The lower spring connects to a hole in the bar lever closer to the connection point for the rod that goes from the bar lever to the clutch fork. How are your spring connection locations positioned ?

              Re: 68 Clutch Pedal question

Maybe you have already checked this, maybe not... Look under your dash at the small (whimpy) metal stop bracket for the clutch pedal. If the car has had the clutch dumped hard in the past, it is easily bent or broken. Also make sure the rubber bumper is still in it. They like to crack and fall out. These two things can grossly effect the stop height of the pedal. Also, I recall the parts manual showing the rubber bumpers the same on the brake and clutch pedal. But, I have taken a few of them apart and I swear, they were different thicknesses. The thickness was enough to make a difference in whether the pedals were level with one another. Hope that make sence. I have rarely not seen the stop bracket either bent or broken. If you inspect the little bracket, you will see that they were sometime poorly welded and the welds like to break. If you weld them up nice, the way they were intended to be, they hold rather well and are fairly strong. Let me know if this is what you were talking about or not. Regards, Terry

I looked at a clutch and brake pedal assembly out of a 68 today. It was a power brake car when removed (not sure if that matters). Both pedals are dead on with regard to being the same height. Terry
