My car is a 65 396. # matching car. Sometimes not always, after the car warms up I have a hard time shifting into reverse it wants to grind, double cluching does not help, if I kill the engine it goes right in. I can then start the engine and go on my way, when I back again it will usually go in gear fine. Also the other day I drove my wife to the mall, I waited for her in the car engine idling probably 10 minutes, I tried to put the car in 1st, it did not want to go, did not grind just hard, finally I pushed hard and it went in with a "klunk" I drove the car home and it shifted fine no other problems or noise, it ran great. Took it out the other day and it ran great. I thimk it is a linkage problem and have checked the adjustment according to the shop manual, and I can't see anything binding. Does anyone has any ideas or suggestions?

Re: 65 BB SHIFTING PROBLEM
Sounds like clutch is dragging. Reverse does not have syncros.. so the gears are always turning, if there is even a slight drag on the clutch, you'll be grinding gears trying to go into reverse. If you are stuck somewhere try dropping it into second, the syncros should stop the shaft from spinning, then shift to reverse. This helps, but the real solution is to adjust the clutch.- Top
