if your corvette has the fiberglass "BIG" tank because i have seen the stuff disolve the material in the tanks. this was not a corvette but a "kit car" with a fiberglass tank.

        Re: MAX LEAD 2000

I use Lead Supreme 130. Max lead and lead supreme both contain TEL (real lead) and are very effective at boosting octane. Use just enough to prevent run on and knocking. Be advised that neither of these products are legal for street use per EPA regulations. They are sold for "off road use only". Works great though!

            Clem,

Would you say this is as good as just using racing fuel? I'm considering trying an additive in the 66 425 HP car instead of mixing 115 octane with street fuel and I wanted some opinions on this. Racing fuel is a little difficult to buy here in the Tampa area unless I want a 55 gallon drum so if an additive would do the job, I'd be content with it. I have a lot to learn about fuel. Thanks, Michael

i have never used this product so i can not express a opinion. i wonder how they can sell TEL over the counter as it is a a product that can cause serious health problems. back in the 60s we got TEL from the gulf research labs to boost our fuel for racing and they told us to use rubber gloves and not to breath the fumes.we were told to add 4 cc to each gallon of sunoco 260.

The product label states the following. "Notice: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm". So I guess as long as you don't live in California, you should be fine! Neverrrr hasssss efffffected meeeeee nonnnnnne!:D

Re: buy lead supreme 130 direct

Thanks Clem. I have never tried any of the products in a can because I've always had the real thing available but now I'm going to probably have to try to find something else that works. I've heard good and I've heard bad about all of the additives and I would like to find out the truth about all of it before using any of it. I go to a lot of the old muscle car cruise-ins here and if you ask 50 people their opinion, it seems to be about evenly divided between positive and negative. Some say it's just garbage that does nothing and others swear by the stuff.

I also wondered about TEL. I thought that was removed from the face of the earth several years ago by the EPA. I was surprised to see several people selling it.

I've also heard that Toluene was compatible with gasoline and worked well to boost octane but I've been afraid to try it.

Why mix kerosene in your gas?

Read the MSDS label. Pure TEL is highly poisonous and can be absorbed through the skin. This product has very little TEL in it, however. What you're buying is 99% kerosene.

If you have a compression ratio that requires more octane than in pump premium, and I doubt you really do, run a 50% mix with aviation gas or racing gas. Both are illegal on the street until you pay the road taxes due. I guess you can always add that into your IRS check next year.

                      Re: MAX LEAD 2000

I have a 69 L71 that has been giving me pinging problems for a long time. I have tried all of those additives and the only thing that works is either a 50/50 mix of 93 pump gas and 100 octane low-lead Avgas or a 2/5 mix of 93 pump and 110 Sunoco racing fuel. The compression ratio in this engine is too high for the 93. It was built for performance without regard to fuel availability. Also remember that these additives may eat up things in carbs, etc.

Re: Why mix kerosene in your gas?

I think you bring up a good point. I just did a little research and this stuff does not have as much TEL as I would have thought. However, it still has a significant amount of TEL. Lead Supreme 130 has 60 grams of TEL per gallon. However, in the 60's leaded supreme had as much as 3.5 G/gal. By 1982 that was reduced to 1.25 G/gal. It would take A LOT of the additive to get that much TEL when dilluted in the gas. They claim a 5 point octane increase with 1.8 oz. per gallon of gas. If mixed with 93 octane, this would yield 98 octane (R+M)/2. If converted to the old standard of RON, this would exceed the recommended octane requirements of the time. However, that mix only yields .84 G/gal of gas, much less than the 3.5 grams of the 60's or even the 1.25 grams of '82. I'm not an expert on gasoline, but obviously todays unleaded premium contains other additives to increase octane in replacement of TEL, so it shouldn't require as much TEL to get high octane levels when mixed with todays premium unleaded.

Having said all that, this stuff really does work. I have had occasional knocking and usually had run on. However, using enough Lead Supreme 130 to raise octane by just 2 points eliminates all knocking and run on. AV fuel contains TEL as well, so I don't know of any advantage to using one over the other. Mixing unleaded race gas with pump gas and avoiding TEL, is probably the best option for increasing octane. Up to 100 octane unleaded is street legal, and you avoid the health risks of TEL. Obviously, you should just use pump gas if you can get away with it.

                          Re: MAX LEAD 2000

I have used Max Lead for as long as Jack has sold it. This is in my 1963 Z06 that I have owned since new. It works real fine, I do wear gloves and a mask when mixing it. I have wide mouth 5 gal can that I first put in 4 oz of ML 2000 than add the fuel (93 Oct.), shake up the can and pour it in the tank using a funnel with a fine screen. Be sure to shake the ML bottle before using as it tends to separate.
