I'd like to solicit information that will help me clarify a couple of points related to the replacement of an original style Delco battery. What is the correct battery model and acceptable date code range for a 1974, 454, 4-speed, AC, Coupe, build date, Jan. 11, 1974? My second edition TIM states the correct model as an R-89WT, but doesn't make any reference to a date code range. Ater viewing the most recent Driveline ad of Restoration Battery, I'm not clear on the correct model or available sources from where to purchase it. Restoration Battery refrences a Delco model R-89W (no T) for 1970-1973's with a 454 (I was told that this battery has a wrinkle top finish). Their ad makes no reference to a replacement battery for a 1974? I was also told that Delco dropped the wrinkle top in '73. With a Top Flight judging goal in mind, what would be the point results for a replacement Delco Battery, model R-89W, wrinkle top finsh?

Re: Original Delco Battery
Ray, contact the vendor to see if the R-89WT is even reproduced. If it is reproduced, then the vendor will know an appropriate date code for your car. If not, then your best bet for judging purposes will be to install a current Delco-branded equivalent battery. The Delco brand will get you some points, but you will still see a deduct. That's the best you can do...what is, is.- Top
