63 Tail light Harness / Inner Lamp Assembly

I am attempting to replace the the inner lamps (entire units) and entire wiring harness. The harness appears to go through a gromet in the rear of the vehicle just above the muffler on the left side. Does this gromet need to be cut? There seems to be no way to feed the new harness through this gromet without cutting it. Were the ends of the harness (plugs that plug onto the taillights) installed after the harness was pulled through originally? Also, my RH inner tail light assy is a Trim Parts product and looks pretty good, I cannot say the same for my LH inner tail light assy. The company i bought them through said the Trim Parts LH inner has been on back order for over a year. Any thoughts?

    Rick -

The original grommet was sliced at assembly (as noted in the A.I.M.) to insert the harness - no connectors were removed. I'd contact Trim Parts directly - I'm not aware of any back-order situation on their lamps (at least in sets).

What is the best way to remove this grommet, from inside of the vehicle or the outside of the vehicle? I tried yesterday from both sides and had no success, other than starting to destroy the grommet. I don't know if it has been glued in, or if over time the rubber has adheared to the fiberglass. I am trying to remove the grommet with both the taillight harness and the antenna coax still passing through it. They don't appear to be to tight as to impede the process.
      Any help would be appreciated.

        Rick -

The grommet was originally installed from the inside of the passenger compartment, not from the fuel tank side. To correct my earlier post, the grommet came pre-slit for the body wiring harness, and another slit was cut at St. Louis to accommodate the antenna cable/wiring on radio-equipped cars. If you destroy the grommet while removing it, Doc Rebuild has them (#1014649).
