I just purchased a pretty nice '68 vert. small block nom. Here's the strange things found : 1) has big block suspension (1&1/16" front sway bar, rear sway bar, 7 leaf rear spring), has taped up TI harness (no amp box and appears to have had a '69 front clip installed some time ago--has the forward reinforcement "angles" and the top surround glass seems too "solid" for a '68?), has ONE 5/16" fuel line from tank to fuel pump, has what looks to be an original '68 L88 short hood with air box, has a big block radiator/rad. support and fiberglass shrould. Also has what looks to be an "AW" rear end----hard to read---but the gearing sems to be 3:55:1 or 3:71:1??? The red line is low (5300?), but the panel appears to have been r&r. This is a early production (166) '68, and there are pieces of the tank sticker visable from the fuel opening, but does not look like there is enough to "tell the story" (I will pull the tank this week). The battery is mounted inside the engine compartment like in '67?? Any thoughts? Thanks, G.

Re: '68 questions
George------
Early 68's may have quite a few anomolies compared to later cars. However, I really doubt that some of the ones you've described were the way they are now when it left the factory.
I have seen what I regard to be a known original, very early 1968 small block car which had heavy duty suspension. The shocks on the car were definitely original with broadcast stickers, part numbers and dates confirming it. The car also had a 7 leaf rear spring. I don't think that it had the F-41 front bar, though. This car was an original owner car that had been stored for over 20 years when I saw it. It had been sold out of the owner's estate.
I really question a 5/16" fuel line. Corvettes went to a 3/8" fuel line WAY before 1968, so even a carry-over is not possible.
The engine compartment-mounted battery seems impossible to me. Many unlikely things can happen, but I just can't see a 1968 Corvette with an original engine compartment-mounted battery. The very early 1968 that I previously described definitely did not have an engine compartment-mounted battery. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: '68 questions
George, I have a question for you. I once met this guy on the NCRS tech board and ended up buy some corvette parts from him. Long story made short....the guy ripped me off (you might know the type). Aint that a neat story. What's your advice? How should I deal with this person? I'll wait for your reply. Terry- Top

3/8" fuel line
The fuel line is 3/8". I assumed that the battery placement was not factory, but there were so many "0dd" things in '68 that I wasn't sure. What else can I look for to determine the factory configuration of this Vette? Thanks, G.- Top

Just a little advise.......
I love this hobbie. In some ways, I have been a victim of my own desires. I have spent thousands of dollars buying parts through the mail over the last several years. That is no exageration. Sometimes, in my desire to find a certain part I have made purchases from people I didn't know. One of those purchases was from someone I met on this board. A couple others were from people I met through Hemmings Motor News and Ebay. If you are new to this hobbie please note that if you purchase things from out of state and from a private party and things don't work out. You are screwed! I must note that they are the exception, not the rule. To some extent I have factored it in to the cost of the projects I work on. I even expect it to happen now and then.- Top
