The LT1s are interesting in this regard, i.e. what they came with/what they didn't. Regarding what you mentioned, the most discussed is the availability of PS on the 70 LT1. The 70 LT1 was built by Duntov in order to have a small-block racer as such it had few convience type options, to start. At the start of the run it (PS) was not an option, records show this and since the car had a 6qt oil pan, it was an option that "would not fit". However, research has proved that during April of 1970 the oil pan was changed to 5qt and indeed PS was available starting in May of 1970. So to determine reality for PS and 70, look for the oil pan, insure the build date is later than 5/1/70, and of course a tank sticker is good as well. The trans and rear-ends were M20, M21, and M22 (Z cars only 25 of those) ratios were 3:55, 3:70, and 4:11. The 71s and 72s had pretty much all the general type options (such as AC) as the govt had started the HP "takedown".

1971 Steel Valve Covers
Can anyone out there tell me what the correct steel valve covers look like for a 71 base engine car? I'm talking about wire clips, etc. I'm trying to locate a pair for my car. When I bought the car, the valve covers on it are the raised rib aluminium type. I have located a pair of steel valve covers, but question whether they are correct. Thanks, Anthony- Top

It's a little tough to precisely describe these covers relative to shape, but, generally, they were of stamped steel construction, had rounded edges common to most small block Chevy valve covers and had a flat surface about 1-7/8" wide which ran the lenth of the covers.
All 1969-1972 stamped steel, small block covers were very similar, but there were some subtle and not-so-subtle differences. The not-so-subtle difference was that 71-72 covers used a rubber plug-type closure for the oil fill on the left side cover; 69-70 used a twist-lock oil filler.
As far as clips go, I'm really not quite sure. I don't think that any of these covers had clips on the right side cover. On the left side cover, there may have been one or two clips on the upper edge for the carburetor idle control solenoid wiring. But, I'm not sure about this.
If you want to obtain a set of 1971 small block steel valve covers it's very easy. Go to your local self-serve wrecking yards. Look for any 1971 model Chevrolet car equipped with a small block V-8 and which appears relatively un molested. The same valve covers were used on most other 1971 Chevrolets with small block. So when you find the car I described, you'll very likely have the valve covers which you're after (or confirmation of what they look like).In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Joe, Looking for steel valve covers from another 71 Chevrolet was suggested to me. So I looked and am still looking. It seems that all the Chevys of that era in my area have been picked through and crushed. When I ask the local "junk men" they sort of snicker and give me a "yea sure". Thanks, Anthony- Top

Going to a "full service" type wrecking yard will be useless. There you're likely to get exactly the response you've received. Even if they have the valve covers (or SAY they have the valve covers), you won't know, for sure, what year they came off of. Just because they may have the ubiquitous yellow "scrawl" saying "1971 Chevy" doesn't mean that's what they actually came off of.
You need to find a SELF-SERVICE type wrecking yard. We have MANY here on the west coast. Then, peruse the inventory which is usually large. I have found many early 70s cars, and even 60s cars, in the inventories. You won't, of course, find a LOT of these cars, but there are usually always at least a few around. All you need to find is ONE relatively unmolested example and you've got what you need. If you find an old 4 door 1971 Impala or Chevelle, very likely the engine compartment will be relatively unmolested.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
