Recently acquired a 1981. I think it has a typical problem, a part of the door opening mechanism has broken and the driver's door won't open. The exterior handle does not feel like it's connected to anything. After the inner door panel is off, how do I proceed?

When you depress the outer handle, a cam mechanism pulls a rod upwards. The rod is connected to the door latch mechanism. As your inner door handle apparently works (how else would you get the door open to remove the panel?) I would guess that either the door handle cam mechanism or the rod has come discombobultated.
You may have to remove a tranlucent plastic moisture shield and a molded black plastic rain deflector to see this mechanism. Usually pretty easy to fix, if you have small hands.
