Could anyone tell me from past experience which of the Pertronix ignition systems works the best, and did you use the stock coil or upgrade it as well, they offer several versions to replace the original points. Any thoughts on there part number 1181LSC which uses a lobe sensor on the original distributor shaft. Also are there any upgrades for plug wires that could be used and still use the original sheilding. Thanks for the help.

Re: 62 Ignition upgrade
Look up "Pertronix" in the archives. There's lots on this subject.
Don't know about that part number. But the correct unit is easy to install, and will work great. Plus you won't have to adjust your points every 10K miles. What's that? You only put 2K miles/year on the car? So the Pertronix will save you a 15 minute job every 5 years.
Look at the instructions when you get it. They'll tell you your stock coil will work just fine. You don't need 90 bazillion volts firing your plugs. You won't get better performance with a Megablaster coil.
One of the Pertronix units has 2 wires. Another has 1 wire. Use the 1 wire model if stock appearance is important to you.
'Course the Pertronix is an electronic black box. If it breaks, you can't fix it. You'll have to call a tow truck, or switch back to points at the side of the road. I'm told it's easy to switch back to points. But my experience is that things always break at the worst possible time.
BTW, I switched the points in my '62 to a Pertronix system about 5 years ago. No problems. Don't know that I'd do it again.- Top

Re: 62 Ignition upgrade
Chris, I have the Petronix unit on our '69 big block convertible.I think it is the one wire setup. I upgraded to a Jacobs Electronic ignition coil & control box. Works just fine with my Holly TBI fuel injection. Good luck. David Nims #19639- Top

Re: 62 Ignition upgrade
Gary,
I installed the two wire Pertronics in my 57 early last year. They failed early this year at a cruise in at a local Sonic Drive In. I installed points on the spot and drove home. Pertronics warranted the system but I am still running the points. Don't know that I will switch back.

Re: 62 Ignition upgrade
I have used the Pertronix unit with great results. However, I have since replaced it with the Breakerless SE unit. The Breakerless SE uses thte stock single wire for a more stock appearance. The red wire from the distributor to the ballast resistor is a dead give away for a Pertronix unit. I also found the Breakerless SE to be easier to install. There are other advantages to this unit vs. Pertronix that you can read on the Lectric Limited website. Either works great, but I prefer the Breakerless unit.- Top

Re: 62 Ignition upgrade
Gary,
As additional information, I installed a Mallory Unilite system in my 65 L79 about 1987. It has worked flawlessly since with nothing more than an occasional glance to make sure it is still under the cap.
So, electronic conversions do work and I know a number of people who have run Pertronics systems for some time with no trouble.
