I'm replacing the rubber seals on the splash pans between the front fender wells and frame on my '69. The rubber seals have small ridges on one side. Do the ridges face up or down? Thanks.

Re: splash pan rubber seals
Jack, I have an opinion, but I can't say with certainty that it's the factory way since I made no observations one way or the other. In fact, I don't remember any ridges on my seals.
You can probably examine the originals to see how the staples were clinched...on the side where the staple ends are bent over, I would expect to see tiny tears adjacent to the holes in the rubber seal. On the opposite side of the seal, you should see the original depression of the staple head.
Without originals to examine, I would install the seals this way: staple heads on the side with the ridges. Since the AIM shows the staple heads on the top or inside surface, then that would put the ridges to the inside. There may be a moral here...Just because vendors reproduce a part with little details just like the originals, doesn't mean you should be lulled into making those details visible for the whole world to see.- Top
