Is it me, or do our early Vettes have their own "smell" when left in a closed up garage? Seriously, I have noticed and wondered over the years why the family Vette has always had it "own" unique smell different than any other car. It is a kind of hot paint/gas/sweet smell that you notice whenever you go into the garage that has been closed up for awhile. My guess is that it has something to do with the open vented carb since the car predates the closed vent charcoal canisters of today? Just wondering if everyone else's vintage Vette also creates it's own unique "sweet" contribution to your nose...?

Re: Any dead critters under the seat??
Nothing organic, Tim did a great job of describing the smell. I have a Northern New England car that has been here its' entire life. I believe that past owners left the car outside much of the time. The smell did diminish a bit after I took apart the entire interior last winter and bead blasted/cleaned and repainted everything underand in the dash.
But the smell as Tim described (fuel, etc) is still there.

Re: Stinky...That's what my wife named ours.
She always complains the garage smells like gas fumes and when stopped at a traffic light for awhile she gets anxious for the light to change as she says she is getting fumigated (car has factory sides). I try and leave it outside to cool down because if I park it in the garage hot it gives of fumes as well as odors from the heat of the exhaust pipes on the fiberglass linings of the side exhaust covers. I really don't like that either but I don't make a big deal about it otherwise she might decide we should get rid of it. NO WAY. She'll be the next to go. I like talking smart when she's not around.- Top

Re: Stinky...
Tim,
I don't know how early of a year you are referring to but my '69 coupe has the smell I think you are describing. My car is unrestored so I think this must have a lot to do with it . It is definitely not an animal smell. It is a cool old car smell. I had a 1969 S/C Rambler a while back which was unrestored and had the exact same smell. Very different, you truly know it is an old car thing. It's things like that which make working with old cars unique, you have to live it to understand it. Craig- Top

Re: Stinky...
During my wife's three pregnancies, the smell of the cars and motorcycle in the garage and on me made her nauseous. I would walk in after a ride to give her a hug, and she would have to choke down an up-chuck. It doesn't do the ego much good to know your presence will literally make your wife sick to her stomach. On the second & third kid, it was as reliable as a pregnancy test kit.- Top
