Does unopened antifreeze have a shelf life (for the additives)? If so, can someone tell me how many years? I guess they don't put dates on the containers. If it was milk I wouldn't have to ask. Thanks.

Depends on the additive package
The conventional green stuff has a shelf life of about two years. Over time the silicates will tend to precipitate out forming a gel known as "green goo".
Havoline Extended life (Dexcool) has no silicates and is not subject to this type of degradation. It has an indefinate shelf like, so if you see a good sale on it, stock up.

Re: Depends on the additive package
Thanks Duke. I'll spring for some new stuff. Associated question. What is the procedure for refilling via the expansion tank? I suppose you have to put some in and put the cap on to pressurize the system in order to get the fluid drawn into the radiator. Didn't think about this prior to draining and installing the new expansion tank.- Top

Re: Depends on the additive package
Be sure to completely drain and flush the system before using Dexcool to remove all the green stuff.
You'll need two gallons of antifreeze and two gallons of distilled water (small block, more if BB). I usually start with the antifreeze and slowly pour it in until the tank if full, then start the engine and continue to pour as room is available. You should let the engine run until the thermostat opens and continue to keep the tank half full. Once the level stabilizes install the cap and take it for a short ride. Then let the engine cool and check the level.
