    C-3 axle number location

    I have looked and looked, and don't see the numbers on my 1971 rear end which will tell me the date of Mfg and axle ratio.
    Can someone help me with the exact location of the stampings?

      Steve you are just not looking in the right place, the stamping if it is there and it should be is on the drivers side at the bottom area of the housing.

          Ah yes--very weak strike but looks like it says AC W230

              Upon further examination, the diff # is AC W230 1.
              Can someone decode this for me?

                  The "AC" code was used for the 1971 to 1975 model years. It denotes a 4.11:1 ratio originally installed in the unit. "W" denotes the Chevrolet Gear and Axle Plant in Warren, MI as the manufacturing plant. "230" denotes the consecutive day of the year in which it was manufactured. "1" denotes that it was produced on first shift of that day.
