THanks Joe for the response on the hood question. Here is another hood question.

Has anyone seen or heard of grease pen markings on the underside of the hood? The 1972 that I am looking at is a one owner, high mileage car and has a 3 digit number with a long line underneath then what looks like a date below the horizontal line.

Susan, the underside of the hood should be black, so the grease pencil markings are...white or yellow? Typically any marks on the underside of the hood are from sources other than the factory, but if the date is within days of the car's build date, then it would be worth checking out.

Look at the trim plate on the driver side door hinge pillar (just below the windshield)...there should be a date code in the top outside corner consisting of a letter and two digits. Post that date code and the date on the underside of the hood. If the two dates correlate, then we can tell where to find a three digit number to see if it matches the one on the underside of the hood.

Thanks for the response. The build date code from the trim plate is J16 (May 16) and the date on the hood is 5-25-72. It appears that the date under the hood was uncovered while the engine compartment was being cleaned. The grease markings are yellow in color.

Susan, I found a date and initials UNDER the blackout on the underside of my 70 hood, but the date preceded the car's build date by 8 days. In your case, the date follows the build date by 9 days; if it's on top of the blackout it may have served another purpose related to shipping, etc.

There was a three digit "job number" assigned to each Corvette which followed the vehicle all the way through the manufacturing process. This "job number" identified all the specific options and equipment. Job numbers started at 001 and increased to either 499 or 999. There is a lot of valuable information about these numbers in the archives if you are clever with the search engine.

The easiest place to access the job number on your 72 is on right hand side of the lower firewall under the AC evaporator or heater box. If you remove the sheet metal "splash shield" on the angled lower firewall that forms the front of the footwell, you will find a three digit number in the same white or yellow crayon. If the number there matches the three digit number on the underside of your hood, the marks on your hood were very likely made at the St. Louis plant.
