    is my timing chain loose

    i dropped the oil pan. when i reach up and push on the timing chain, i can push it in [towards the midline] about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. ought this to be repalced. any thoughts on anything else to do while i am at it??

      Absolutely replace it. Also, replace the crank and timing sprockets, too. My recommendation would be a Cloyes True Roller which are supplied as a matched set of sprockets and chain. About $90 for a small block.
