I have dug through the archives and read the JG but still am unclear on a couple of areas of hood blackout. As I understand the blackout procedure, the underhood lip mask stops just forward of the hinges and the front lip has only a minimal amount of exterior color overspray evident on the raw fiberglass. The hinge area to leading edge is where I am having trouble visualizing paint coverages.
Since the leading lip (side to side across the front underside of the hood) has minimal to no exterior color or blackout paint evident on the fiberglass, am I correct in assuming that the forward most surface of the underhood framing also has very minimal exterior or blackout paint evident with considerable fiberglass showing?
Did the underhood lip from the hinge to the leading edge of the hood get full coverage of exterior color? Also, since the mask stopped just forward of the hinges, is there less blackout with more color showing on the side framing surface in this area?
Lastly, what would the point deduct be if I just "overrestored" the underside of the hood and completely covered the forward of hinge lip and front lip with color and blacked out all of the forward areas of the hood frame? Since this is a painted hood, it's not going to be easy to get to raw glass in the forward areas as stripper will be too risky to use. (The previous owner ran the blackout out to the edge on the entire hood.) I doubt that this would be the first area that I would be guilty of excessive recon.
Thanks to all for your assistance. Regards, Larry
