The tach is not working on my '64 327/300. I understand the drive gear at the distrubutor can be a problem. I would like to check the tach itself and was wondering if its possible to use a drill attached to the cable to see if the tach will work. I would be sure I knew the rpm of the drill before using it and had a buddy sitting the car to monitor the tach itself so I didn't "over rev" it. Any suggestions?

Re: Tach test
the distributor gear runs at 1/2 the actual crank speed, so the tach reading is twice what the cable speed is. The tach can run safely within the normal speed range of any household drill. Why not just pull out the bushing from the dist and look at the gear? It's a lot easier.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Tach Check
Steve,
I tried that and it doesn't work too well. The drill only rotates about 1800rpm which doesn't give you much to read on the tach, but it will identify if it is not registering at all. Also be careful of the rotation direction. The rotation on my 57 is CCW I think and yours may be also?
My 69 had that problem and it turned out the cable was just a little too short - the interior cable, not the casing. In that case the tach won't read at all. Thats an easy fix.
