    62 C1 Generator not Generating

Per the direction in the ST12, I ground my generator (I think it was the armature) while setting the points recently and now the generator is not longer generating. I also might have overfilled the oil to the generator bearings. Any thoughts on where I should look to solve the problem?

    Thanks,
    Mike

To polarize generator you jump battery terminal on gen to field terminal on gen. Then jump lower two on regulator. This was the advice given to me on this board a while back and it worked on my car. I had taken the battery out for a while and when I put it back in I had no charging. Hope this helps.

If jumping the terminals doesn't help, check the brushes. They are easy to change.

        Terry,

I believe by my generator has a feild terminal, armature terminal and a ground. When you say "battery terminal on the generator" are you referencing the armature?

Thanks for the help... I have never heard of "polarizing" the generator.

          Mike -

All you need to do is to take an (old) screwdriver or a U-shaped piece of wire and briefly touch to both the "BAT" and "GEN" terminals on the voltage regulator; you'll see a nice fat spark, and your generator will be polarized.

I guess this a good sign that we have people interested in Corvettes that do not know about polarizing a generator . At least we are getting some younger members. I can remember when all GM dealers stocked a quantity of Delco 61-U generators. Same as Vette other than non tach drive. An alternator was something strange that Mopar was using on their cars. And I was only two when the alternator was first installed on a Corvette.

                Only two???

Hey, Dickie, that would have made you a pre-embryo when MoPar debuted the alternator in 1960.... Why GM and Ford wouldn't pay Chrysler's patent royalty for a 4-diode, full wave bridge rectifier and went to the kluge 3-phase design with 6-diodes where only four are needed is beyond me!

Shhhhh. Don't tell everyone! I might convince one or two that I am not but 35 years old
