Re: WASHERS: C2 SB Exh.Manif, w/wo C60 [detailed]
Wayne,
No 60's or 70's small block engines ever used washers on the two center bolt locations that I know of. I'm not sure why the AIM would show washers in that location, if it does.

That's what I figured, but NCRS '65 TIM & JG
(3rd ed.) reads "ALL" SB manifold bolts had the spacer washers [it does say only the end pairs for BB's], and since the AIM drawings are inconsistent on this subject, I undertook the measuring experiment of my post, which pointed to what you've said; ie. that middle bolts have no washers.
I'd be curious to know what other C2/C3 NCRS manuals have to say on the middle washers.
Thanks, Wayne- Top

Hate to disagree with the manual but....
I've never seen washers on the center bolts. I'm really surprised there hasn't been more response on this issue from members.- Top

Re: Hate to disagree with the manual but....
I've worked on small-blocks for decades, and I've never seen one with ram's horn manifolds that had the spacer washers on the center pair of bolts; even the vendors sell the spacer "kits" with 8 pieces, not 12.- Top

Re: Hate to disagree with the manual but....
John,
How do we find out if the 65 JG calls for spacers on all bolts? Do you happen to have a 65 manual?
Maybe we should start a new thread on this and see if we can get someones attention because if the manual calls for twelve washers, that's totally incorrect as far as I'm concerned. This is a very old post and I don't think any one is seeing it now.

Here's how the '65 3rd ed. reads, verbatim
I realize the 5th edition is the current issue, and this may have been since changed.
(begin TM & JG quote) Page 94: "Exhaust Manifolds, section: Bolts, Studs, Nuts, Flanges, Washers and Heat Riser
Small Block: Exhaust manifold bolts have French locks on both the end pairs of manifold bolts. The tabs are bent over to lock the bolts in place. A washer (spacer) is used between the French lock and manifold. Washers (spacers) are used under all bolts. The manifold bolts, washers(spacers) and French locks are installed when the engine is painted; therefore they will show evidence of engine paint. Do not judge engine paint here." (end quote)
Now I read this to mean all 12 bolts, not just the 8 on the 4 corners. In the next paragraph for Big Blocks, its specifically states that washers are used on corner cylinders 1,7,2 and 8.
What do the other year's manuals state ? I agree, this should be responded to in a new thread.- Top
