81 was the first of the Corvettes (along with all GM pass cars to carry the closed loop feedback electronically metered carburetor emissions system, We had one of these in our engineering fleet where I work 7 drove it a lot over the two years we had it, without problems. As joe has mentioned, you need more than just the bolt on-parts, the first thing to do would be to see if you can find out what might have been left. Often when these cars were "converted" to non-smog configuration the wiring and computer were left in place, because of the difficulty of removing them. the routing of the harness from the computer is low on the pass side firewall, with the computer iether up under the dash on the pass side or in the pass side kick panel, i forget which. If you get a list of what you're missing, the next step I'd take is to try to find a Corvette wrecking yard that does Late model salvage & see what they could provide. If the wiring has been cut up, it almost certainly will need replace as a complete unit. The Computer harness on those cars was not integrated in to the IP fully, so I can be replaced as a separate unit. The car we had, which was driven fairy hard by a large number of drivers, gave us no trouble at all. It was replaced in the fleet by a '84 when they came out, but that's another story...

66 air conditioner/dash lights
Hi,
I have a 66 coupe with air. The air works ok but my question concerns the top two air conditioner controls on the dash. These are the two knobs above the clock.
Are they supposed to light up? The cables go through the air conditioner duct but there does not seem to be any wires or lights.
Am I missing something?
Thanks,

Re: 66 air conditioner/dash lights
Ed, As it happens I had all the C60 pages out of my 66 build manual because of some work accomplished last summer to correct a couple of faults in our 66.On page E308 you can see the entire C60 wire harness.Indeed it does show two extra lamps for the upper two cable assemblys. The assembly manual doesnt quite show exactly where they go,and even though Ive had my dash apart many times I cant remember where they go either.Oh well!I hope this much helps you out anyway.........Bill S.- Top

Re: 66 air conditioner/dash lights
Ed, There is an entirely separate wiring harness for just those two lights on air-conditioned cars. Plugs directly into the right side of the fuse box and clips directly beside the clock. the light fixtures are those little metal oblong tubes with a plastic green covers.- Top

Ed
There is not a lot of light that comes through the bezels on the a/c and heater controls on the center console. You might want to hold a small flashlight directly behind the controls to guage for yourself. Also double check and see if your bezels are of the type that will let light through and are not solid.

Re: 66 air conditioner/dash lights
Those bulbs(especially those two)get really hot in those little housings and tend to turn sort of black, and at that point emit very little light. They may be there, and be working but not doing much good.If you havent, try replacing all the bulbs!..........Bill S- Top
