Yes, it has all the numbers. I thought I had read somewhere that some dealers had the capability to imprint the metal, but maybe I'm wrong. I have not read the other posts yet. Maybe there's more info there.

I agree that the assy plant could not know the buyer. This POP book has the VIN in perferations along the edge. I have a statement from the original owner who said he went thru 2 or 3 batteries in a short time (glove box light?) and there is a statement in the book about a battery replacement shortly after delivery. According to the original owner, he went to order a new Corvette in late May of 68 and the dealer told him they were no longer taking new 68 orders. They showed him a list of cars that were "coming in" and he picked this one. Maybe the car was already "sold" and the deal fell through and they had to re-apply for the warranty. Or maybe somebody faked this POP, but it sure looks right to me. Based upon the history of this car, there would have been no reason to fake one, as I know it has been with the car for long before "sharks" were bringing any $$.

I am going to be a Carlisle on Friday. I could bring this and get opinions of who ever is on this discussion and also there.

Sounds just like mine, except all is stamped. The numbers you describe are your engine Assy info, with the last "R" for carb type..Rochester...Mine is "H" for Holley. The other 2 are trans and rear. I also have the "7" with a chevy logo under it.

I just read the warantee book and it clearly says that the dealer will put "your name and address" on the POP with a "special tape". If I can believe the E-Bay post that started this whole thread, then maybe my original owner lost the POP and the factory sent him a new one. I don't think it's a warantee transfer, as others have described because it has all the number info for the engine, trans and rear. Oh well, another mystery, just when I thought understood everything.

I would guess that the original warranty book was lost by either the original dealer or the original very early in the cars life. This was VERY common at that time and continued to be a problem for years. Service writers in the dealers often failed to put the book back in the car when the car was in for service and in many cases, it was lost before the car was even delivered to the 1st retail customer. I've seen it happen many times in the 60's and 70's. A replacement book and generic plate were issued by GM, not the dealer as I remember.

While I am restoring the car I have been doing research on it. I bought it from a COPO dealer who had some rare cars and who had ordered it for someone who backed out of the deal when I happened along. He had several ZL-1's including Camaro's and Chevelles, and a ZL-1 corvette he showed me. My car is a 350hp 327 with an M22 transmission (one of 80 produced that year)with a 3.70 posi rear. No other options for comfort, a base radio, no PS and no PB and no AIR. It was a very light car and did very well on any race track. It had a different Rochester carburetor on it as well. The documentation I have (bill of sale, etc) only lists an option group which I can't decode.
I had thought the PoP would lead me to some more info but no luck so far. It sure would be good if I could get some decoding info on any of this documentation. The tank sticker was destroyed early in the car's life when a gas pump operator (remember those?) overfilled the tank with gas leaking around the rubber seal and all over the tank top.

Anyway this sure makes this an interesting hobby.

Thanks a lot. Where did you get the decode info??

I bought the car in August so all of the dates look right.

I was hoping to get a little more detail out of it for the carburetor and the transmission, both of which seem to be out of the norm for this car.

Jim I have a original owner 68 like yours, but with a M21 close ratio Muncie. Also have a original owner 70. Both cars had the 5 year 50,000 mile warranty. 1970 was the last year of having the 5 year 50,000 mile as I remember.

That's one possibilty. I know mine was delivered at the dealer...Robert Chev in Hicksville NY. They are still there, but nobody from the old days is around. The explaination that the POP with all stamped info could be a replacement makes sense, but in my case I know the book is original because there is an entry dated in it 6 days after delivery with the mileage at 75 for a battery replacement. I guess the plate could have been lost without losing the book.

The issue of the factory not knowing who the owner would be is interesting. They COULD have in the case where a car was ordered for a specific person rather than for dealer inventory, but the fact that they COULD have doesn't mean they did. After all, the build sheet has zone and dealer info and it's a short paperwork step to the prospective owner.

Anyway, just speculation. When I get my time machine tuned up, I'll check on that and a few other things.

The only reason I mentioned it was that the dealer made such a big deal out of the warrantee difference. They told me that the 5 year warrantee was a response to the quality issues that chevrolet had been experiencing hurting sales. They told me that these issues were resolved in the 1969 cars. Anyway, the 5 year warrantee expired quite a while ago and I still have the car.

The 5-year warranty was MOST likely a direct response the the standard offering from the competition in that era (CHRYSLER)....
