Got no tail ( lights that is 55)

OK I'm not an electrician but my 55 Corvette has turn signals working but no brakes lights or tail lights. Tell me what is wrong whiz kids or you older guys.

Re: Got no tail ( lights that is 55)

Roy, if your rear turn signals work, there is no ground issue. The brake lights are powered from the fuse panel, and feed through the turn signal switch. Check the brake light switch (near the pedal) for power in and power out. Once the voltage goes to the turn signal switch, the circuit to the rear of the car is the same as the turn signal circuit. The turn signal switch must be returned to exact center, or the contacts in the switch may not make up for the brake lights.

The tail lights are powered from the headlamp switch. Check for power out on the appropriate wire. I assume you have a 55 wiring diagram. If not, email me and I'll look it up.

There is an article by yours truely on C1 electrical troubleshooting and repair in the FEB, 2004 issue of Corvette Enthusiast if you happen to have a copy.

CE back issues are worth buying

just to get a complete set of John Hinkley's tech articles. I keep all mine filed for future reference. They cost about $4(?) ea and are available through Amos Publishing. I think you may be able to order them from the website.

ED! Yes it was the headlight switch , just got old !
Checking the brown wire I located the problem.
I have many NOS replacement parts that I changed it with. Works OK now and thanks for your input.
