    1967 information

    Dear ncrs,
A friend recently acquired a 1967 corvette convertibile. He and I are trying to find out more about this car. The vin (located on the driver's side in front of the door is as follows; 194677s104817. I know most of the breakdown but would be interested in knowing if it is possible to determine the month and week/day of production. There is also a story from my friend's father (the previous owner) that this car was an original big-block car. The current engine is a small block with the following information; 1) 3782870 blk casting # 2) f05t8he and 5118232 stamp pad #'s 3) 3890490 intake manifold # 4) 3782461 both cylinder head #'s with e175 date codes (both).
We would like to find out more on the history of this car if possible. I understand the build sheet may be located on top of the gas tank? Also any info on big block vs small block differences would be appreciated. Also where would one find the paint/trim/option codes other than on the build sheet. Thanks in advance to all who may wish to respond.

    Regards,
    Steve Ashley

    Re: 1967 information

The trim tag should be under the glove compartment riveted to the "bird cage".
The intake is a 66-67 327/350 horse intake, not sure if it was used on the '68.
Heads look like they were cast May 1965. The springs, fron and rear were different between small block and big block.. The rear leaf should be a 7 leaf for a big block, 9 leaf for small block. The front sway bar is lafge diameter for big block and big block cars used a rear sway bar too, sm blks did not.

      Steven & Scott,

7 leaf springs were used on both BB & SB Corvettes in 1967. I have the original 7 leaf spring from my 327ci/300hp car. There are many other differences between BB & SB cars ... why not get the judging guide and study them?

On a 67, the VIN is located on a bar under the glove box next to the trim plate, not on the drivers side in front of the door.

With S/N 4817, the car would have been manufactured late November 1966 (67 model year). Block casting 3782870 was used on Corvettes (not exclusively) ending 1965. F05t8HE would decode as Flint (F)assembly on May 18th (0518, assuming the "t" is the numeral "1"). HE is a code for 327/250hp with manual transmission. I think this engine is the base engine. I'm not too familiar with C2's, but I think "5118232" is the VIN derivative, thus this engine was installed in the 18,232nd vehicle for that year.

          Hope this helps.

            Re: nov 67 w/may 65 vin 18232 engine info

            Hi Steve

As mentioned under the glove box is the vin- trim tags, with paint-trim ,the body number and body build date, like D24 a letter and a number will get you within a day or two to its production date. If its a S for St Louis if A for Andersen and it will be a larger time span.
Birthday calculator lists build as nov.25 1966
            at http://www.ncrswi.bizland.com/wi_ncrs/bdaycalc.htm

Your present engine looks to be a late may built 1965 corvette
            5118232=year 5 vin# 118232 327/250hp for a manual trans and with (correct)461 heads cast may 17 65 a day before engine(block cast date?) may 18 build date FO5I8HE (I assume t is a funny I )A 3697s 3846247 carter wcfb carb on a 3844457 or(late)3866922 cast manifold would have been on the 65 engine.
(note)No vin would be stamped if a pass. engine or 461 heads used.

            Your 66-67 490 aluminum 327/350hp intake with a holley 2818 carb.
I suggest you check your trans cast/ratio/ vin# and rear axle code/date.
Carb build date and possibly, remove intake to remove pan under intake to locate date for intake ,dist. tag ,exhauxt manifold cast # and date and red line on tach as they may help to determine the original engine.
I have heard that original big block story too many times by anyone selling anything.
I'm sure you bought it for what It is.
Much in archives on this often asked subject, you should check them.
            but here goes:
Big block ID items.........as I remember them
            1. different end on tank fuel line to pump, splice under battery tray common.
2.caps and bolt on inner axle yokes instead of nuts on u bolts
            3. close ratio trans 67 cast #5010
            4.rear axle code for 427
5.larger front sway bar and rear sway bar
            6.front coil spring ....tag? dia?
            7 radiator support...radiator

            post your findings
