I am trying to figure out what to time my engine at. The book says 4-5 but prior to my distributor coming loose and moving it was set at 12. What do some of you 435 owners have your engines timed to?

Re: Timing a L-71
You have to check your distributor to see if it has been modified. I believe the stock curve had 30 crankshaft degrees of mechanical advance, all in by 3000 RPM. In my experience, I have brought up the engine RPM until the mechanical advance is all in and then set the total timing and let the idle timing fall where it does. The 427's seem to make the best horsepower between 36 and 40 degrees total, but this may make them harder to start (fighting the starter when the engine is hot). That much total advance with 11:1 compression would likely not run well on pump gas. All said, the factory recs of 4 degrees at idle made for 34 degrees total which did seem to run ok on pump gas.
So. it's up to you, do you want more power or do you want it to run on the gas you can buy?
Good luck,
