    '57 Master Cylinder Identification

Before I have the Master Cylinder sleeved, I want to make sure it is the correct one for this car, which I believe was built in August of 1957. Cast on the inboard side is the following:

    5450233-4R
    12-11 1" DIA.

The plug on the end is stamped with the following:

    5454242
    320-F

Also, any recommendations on where to have the cylinder sleeved would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Re: '57 Master Cylinder Identification

Your '57 Corvette should have '5454480 320-G' stamped in the end plate with a '5456022' casting ID on the side with all digits of the casting number the same size (a SMALL '022 vs. later era LARGE '022 casting). So, what's in your car today is not a factory original/concours correct part. Hence, no real need to shop for a MC sleeving service.

When you shop for the '022 casting, beware. A similar part with IDENTICAL casting number was used in some Buick applications with the difference being the casting boss on the front/inside of the Buick part was machined (drilled and tapped) for a screw-in pressure switch (brake failure warning) while the Corvette MC was left untouched/natural....

      Jack:

Thanks for your information. The help I receive on this site is absolutely invaluable. Now that I'm in the market for a Master Cylinder, could you suggest where I might find one. Are there any rebuilt cylinders available? If there are, what should I expect to pay. If not, what should I expect to pay for a used one? Any other suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

      Regards,

      Bob
