    Carpet Glue...What type do use???

I'm getting ready to install new carpets in my Corvette. I can't locate any liquid type carpet glue that you brush on like I used 20+ years ago. What will work to glue in the foam backed carpeting for my '64 Corvette?

    Thanks,

      Joe,

Thanks for the reply. Can this product be bought at Lowes or Home Depot? How well does it work? Is there any problem with overspray getting on other interior surfaces where they don't belong?

      Thanks again,

      James West

          James:

Your local Pep Boys, or NAPA store might have it. Any "good" jobber (non "supermarket" auto supply store will have it. Lowes/Home Depot will not. Zip/Corvette Central etc, etc will.

It is VERY easy to use, and holds like a vise. Expensive, but well worth it. It uses a 2 position nozzle for a "wide" or "narrow" pattern. Just use a newspaper in your free hand as a "mask" to protect areas, and practice spray on your FoMoCo's hood as a test area. Cleanup with solvent like lacquer thinner, etc.

Al Knoch has the liquid adhesive by the quart... Good stuff and using brush's has some advantage were over lapping is required. 3M general purpose cleaner is a must also.

I bought 5 gallons of yellow glue for putting on a rubber roof and it works the same as the yellow glue used in the auto industy. Spread on both surfaces and it sticks much better than the spray on I used before. They may sell it in gallons where they sell rubber roof material. Lyle

Hope you don't mind jumping on this thread but you mentioned foam backed carpet for your 64. Is this the correct backing that should be on a 64 carpet or is it the replacement carpet. I have a 64 and my carpet has a dark gray foam backing. I've been trying to determine if the carpet was original or an older replacement. The seats dash and door panels are all original and in good condition.

                  Steve,

The backing on 1963/1964 carpet is/was foam backed from the factory. The 63/64 judging manual states the carpet should have a foam backing, no jute material.

Re: Carpet Glue...What type do use???

                    Hello,

I did some shopping and came across a contact cement that is recommended for bonding foam, wood, fiberglass, etc. It is made by DAP and can be bought in quart or gallon cans at ACE Hardware stores. I bought 2 quart cans for $5.49 each. Last night I tested the product by gluing my rear storage well carpet to the storage well board for my '64. The product went on easily using a cheap 2" wide brush. The coverage was excellent and the bond between the carpet to the board is excellent. Working time is approximately 15 to 20 minutes which is plenty of time to cover both surfaces which is called for in the directions.

I beleive this is an excellent alternative to the 3M spray glue and the cost is less than half the cost of the spray glue not to mention that there is no overspray or mist control problems like there is with the spray glue. Another plus is that it again is half the cost of the glue that is sold by Al Knoch Interiors and with out the shipping costs.

Just thought I'd let everyone know what I found and how it worked.

Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!

                    Best Regards,

                    James West
