    61 Tachometer

When I purchased the 61 vette it had an alternator. I changed it back to a generator and reconnected the tach. cable. The tach. now reads twice the RPM's. Can this original 6500 redline tach. be calibrated? If yes, how?

    Thanks for your response. Peter

Peter, sounds like your car was not equipped with a tach drive generator originally, but instead had a tach drive off of the distributor which turns at half speed. Of course someone could have just changed the tach to work with an aftermarket tach drive distributor. Is your block the original? If so you can determine by the stamp code how yours was equipped originally. John

A 61 generator tach will read actual cable speed. If it was made to run off a distributor, it is made to read 1/2 cable speed, which when run off a generator it will read 2x normal. If the tach is original, maybe it was a fuelie car, I think they used a distributor drive, maybe someone else can verify. It should be stamped in ink on the tach housing if it reads cable speed.

If you have the original tach, you may have an ex-fuelie. Was there a hole in the firewall on the passenger side for the tach cable? If the tach cable hole from the tach cable hole is in the center of the firewall, it was probably a tach drive distributer.

John, The block is not original. The tach. has the correct blue number stamp on the back for 61 late based on Noland Adams book. The face is also correct for 61 late High Hp. 6500 redline. The car has no indication of being a fuelie ie. firewall hole. Can the tach. be calibrated for a generator drive with changing the internal guts.

All of the catalog vendors list tach heads at around $75. Not really hard to change. Especially if you already have the tach out. You want to order one that reads "cable speed" vs one that reads 'twice cable speed".
