    Higher Octane Fuel

I'm trying to locate any locations in Southern New Jersey (near Philadelphia) who carries the higher octane fuel. I have a 350hp 70 coupe that is tuned to run on that quality of fuel. Any help would be appreciated.

Dennis, With tuning you're 350hp may be able to run on 92. If not a quick alternative is to use Toluene. Toluene has an octane rating of 114 and is available at paint stores for $7-$8/gallon (a little cheaper if you buy larger quantities). You can run up to about a 30% mixture but that gets expensive. If you look at race fuel composition the main difference is the percentage of toluene. Be carefull with it around your paint though. I used to run it in a 327 that I had in a '60 due to the compression/cam combination. The link below is for an article on it. If you search with "home brew octane booster" you'll find several articles on it. Hope this helps, Ted

      Dennis,
Dont know how close you are to Chadds Ford, Pa. but "Heilmans Sunoco" at Rt1 & 202
is listed by Sunoco as a retailer for Cam 2 GT 100.

You can brew your own by blending in some 100LL avgas that most FSS will let you pump into gas cans (They won't let you pump it into the car.), or find a local distributor of race gas.

Other alternative is to "detune" your engine. Minor adjustment to initial timing and/or the centrifugal advance curve should allow a L-46 to run okay on pump premium.

I live in Southern New Jersey. I buy racing gas for the car at either Gambardella Racing & Performance in Williamstown NJ or Mighty Jo's - a Texaco gas station on Rte 206 in Shamong. Gambardella sells various flavors (octanes/lead) of the race fuel while Mighty Jo's sells only CAM2
