    1968 axle codes

I have a 1968 L-89 with the original tank sheet but not the original axle. The car has an axle out of a 1972 corvette. The tank sheet reads 02G81SA. The description of the axle is not clear due to aging of the paper . If I had to guess I would say that it looked like Positraction 4.11. The 68 NCRS manual that I have does not show a cross reference from the build sheet to the actual ratio. Does anyone know where I could find a cross reference or does anyone know what ratio this code represents. Thanks

Gary, I also have a '68 L-89. On my tank sticker, on the row for Option 02G81SA, it reads "(hole in the paper) POSITRACT AXLE RATIO 411R." Believe this info is what you need.

Does your tank sticker reveal the pre-printed wording on the tank sticker that appears immediately to the right of the positract option number in the "Type" column?

    Best regards,
    Charlie

Hey, Thanks alot. Maybe we should compare tank sheets. The preprinted portion right of the SA is simply Axle. Above it is Transistor Ign., and below it is Transmission. To the right of these preprinted words is just blank until you reach the larged typed letters or in my case the hole. Hope this helps and thanks again. Gary

        Gary,

I don't think there is a "cross-reference" for the code you decribe to tell you what originally came with the car. "G81" is the RPO code for positraction (all ratios). The "SA" is some other code not related to what was installed on the car. I recall there was a thread from John Hinckley on this some time back. I don't doubt that the car probably came with 4.11's, but the code you provided just won't tell you what you're looking for. "FB" is the axle code for Heavy Duty Posi 4.11.

Incidentally, I have my tank sticker also and it is complete except for the Ident No. in the upper left. I would be interested in comparing mine with yours and Charlies.

The "SA" is an ECL code (Exception Letter Code), which triggered the Engineering Bill of Material to produce a specific listing of parts unique to that particular axle application in combination with other options specified on the same car. Noland covers these ECL's in detail in his midyear book, but I've never seen any similar ECL breakdown charts for '68-up Corvettes.

As John H says ... (for example, '67s)

these are ECL codes, found as suffix on tank and window stickers. For '67 model year they are: 308 ratio = BA (327) / JA (427); 3.36 = CA / KA; 3.55 = EA / MA; 3.70 = FA (just a COINCIDENCE with big block 3.70 diff code FA stamping) / NA; 4.11 = GA / PA.
