    C2 Distributor Related Problem?

The problem when you do a lot of things at once is it makes it difficult to track a problem. Pulled the trans on my '64 for a clutch replacement. It was an adventure but everything was back together and the clutch works great. Thanks to everyone for the recommendations on parts etc. Since then however, I'm getting a battery discharge(dead after a couple of days of sitting)and very hard starting. One cause may be that when I was jacking the engine up and down to wiggle out the trans the distributor, unknown to me (live and learn), was pressing against the firewall. Put on a spare cap in case it cracked from the pressure but no effect. What else could have happened from having pressure put on the distributor or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Did you remove the starter? Did all the wires (especially the ground) get back on the correct locations?

Yes I did remove the starter. I just looked at the wires, especially the grounds and did notice the thin ground (not the battery cable) is rather ratty looking where it goes into the terminal. I will repair it and let you know. I also had one of the wires come loose from it's connector while removing the starter and have fixed that but now am wondering if I did it properly. I have another 64 so I will get it on the lift and make sure I have everything where it should go. Will report back. Thanks.

Fixed the bad connector but it didn't help much. Car turns over fine but won't fire. Once in a while it will start to kick in right when I let off of the key. It tries but no fire. I'm trying to get it started so I can put the other one on the rack to make sure everything is wired properly. Will posta gain shortly.

May Have nothing to do with it but check the black ground wire inside the distributor and see if it is loose.

Ok, time to go back to square one, do you have voltage at the dist with the key on and also when cranking? If so, next check for spark, if spark, check timing, usually in this sequence it will start.

I took all advice and beginning with the starter made sure all connectors were fresh, a couple weren't very good. Then moved to the distributor where the black wire inside the distributor was cracked. Also checked the wiring diagram and noticed I had a wire reversed on the heater blower motor, a ground. Got every buttonmed down and it started right up. Thanks so much as it's a beautiful day here and now I can enjoy it!

If it tends to fire only when you let off the key, the coil isn't getting power from the bypass circuit when the starter is cranking; make sure the small black/purple wire is connected to the small "R" terminal on the solenoid - that connection provides power to the coil when cranking.

That one was hooked up properly but I think of all the things I did the one that made the most difference was attaching new terminals to the wires that attach to the + battery post on the solenoid. It's amazing what big differences small things can make. Tempermental little cars...
