    Shark AC "Valve"

    Hi Everyone:

Does any vendor reproduce the vacuum operated "door", (GM calls it a "Valve" P/N 3942618), that separates the AC cold air inlet from the fresh air inlet. This door is VERY often the culprit when AC cars fail to cool as they once did. It pivots on an injection molded "hinge" that is actually simply a crimped section of the door itself which has a built in obsolescence factor. The hinge succumbs to fatigue and fails to close off fresh air from the AC. Tell me SOMEBODY makes it...PLEASE.

Regretfully there is no repro that I have ever seen. You will neeed to repair your original, or find an organ donor.

It is, but not by me

        Sir,

I have worked 80+ hours a week for over 22 years. Therefore if I estimate correctly in "dog years", I have been in business a very long time. I will admit that I have made a few dollars here, in commerial real estate and the NYSE. I truly want for nothing but more free time.

I am not breaking in any new tools, am now somewhat semi-retired (only 40-50+ hours per week) and am entertaining a proposition from a wealthy customer who would like to travel this road. Maybe some day, I will even be able have one of my olds cars judged and find out first hand how good or how bad my stuff has been.

Jerry have you contacted your friendly GM parts person to do a parts search to see if this part can be located in some dealers parts inventory? I remember going to my Chevy dealer years ago and GM produced a parts related magazine and at the back they had a parts wanted list. This was back in the 80's so I don't know about today because I don't spend as much time at the parts counter as I used to. Thinking I would need to replace the one in my 70 one day I bought one of these valves about 12 years ago and am still waiting for the original to fail. If I wasn't going to continue owning my original owner 70 I would sell it to you. I think we are talking about the same valve, it mounts under the top of the right fender and closes when you select MAX on the air conditioner. Did yours break where it pivots to open and close?

            Geoffrey-----

There could NEVER, EVER be a replacement Dr. Rebuild. It's JUST NOT POSSIBLE! I can certainly understand your "burnout" given your major contributions and efforts. But you've just got to stay at it, perhaps at a lower level of effort. If you leave, I might have to give up the hobby and move on to something else.

Geoffrey - I for one commend you on your array of parts. Especially all the items no one else has, the little unique and special items. The amount of work required to amass the knowledge it took to build your parts inventory must have been enormous, and it seems you have branched into the more common parts as well. I will always consider you one of my prime sources for my 67. I, like Joe, apprecaite your expertise, and hope you personally remain in the business. I always visit you at Carlisle, and order from your catalog as well. And your instructions are just great!!! Thx for the great job!.....Craig
