    What serial numbers determine a early or late 66?

    My SN is 110505. As I undertand it that makes the build date sometime in Jan of 66.
    At what serial number or date would a car be considered a 66 L?

    Also is there a way to determine what day a car was produced if you only have the VIN?

    Cheers,

    "Early" and "late" production can vary considerably. It is with reference to certain aspects of the car, and a given car can conceviably have parts that are both early and late. Check the AIM with regard to any part in question. If a change is made during the MY run, the change will usually be noted in the notes on the bottom of the sheet and have a date.

          As others point out, "early" and "late" are relative. I have a 66 built in Feb. From the point of view of seat belts, anything before about 16000 according to the JG is early. "Late" 66 had the seat belts that look like 67. I don't recall any other major items that changed during the year except the 450 HP to 425 HP decal change. There may be others, but from a judging perspective the 66 TM&JG is a good place to start.

            According to the JG, the seam in the aluminum valve covers for the L79 appeared at approximately VIN 17000 (March 1966). I don't know if this qualifies as major.

              It depends on the component involved. for example;

              The shifter mount plate changed during the year. On early cars - Pre-Jan I think - the mounting plate was on the transmission. It later was moved to the frame.

                Ed, I respectfully disagree with your statement......

                "Check the AIM with regard to any part in question. If a change is made during the MY run, the change will usually be noted in the notes on the bottom of the sheet and have a date."

                .....using the revision block date on the REPRODUCED AIMs to ascertain ANY production time frame is very unlikely to coincide with actual part changes. The REPRODUCED AIMs that are available are very incomplete as they do not show all of the releasing/change items. The only AIM that can be relied on for such information would be the GM MASTER AIM copies which shows all of the running changes-------and we unfortunately don't have access to them.

                  I would not suggest that any and all changes can be determined by the AIM, but I have frequently noted changes listed in an AIM that did seem to date the change. I have been looking primarily at C1 MY AIM's, which may or may not make a difference.
