C2 Side exhaust tone Repro vs. NOS- Opinions

I'm looking for 66 BB side exhaust. In my hunting I've heard one consistant theme. The repro pipes don't sound as good as originals.
Is this because there's alot of purist out there that believe the general can't be beat or is there a noticable difference?
I'm curious if the addtional cost of NOS is justified.

Gary - it has to do with the shape and depth of crush on the pipes, I think the repops have a much shallower crush on the pipe and are louder and harsher (less restrictive too). The original pipes are actually quite restrictive, moreso than under car exhaust. They do sound nice though I have heard that the most recent repops (check with Allens) may now be using original tooling or construction similar to originals, so maybe they will sound the same. I honestly forgot to check at Allens in Carlisle this year to see how and if they differ from the past repops.......Craig

Gary - I actually pulled of my original GM BB sidepipes (Inside Diameter 1 7/8ths and put on Stainless Steel Works 2 1/2 Inside Diameter sidepipes. They are louder and less restrictive. I really like them. It is strictly a personal choice what type of sound pleases you.

Gary, The repros are a lot louder. I have a 427 with a 9:1 CR and it is much louder than a friends 427-390 with OEMs. I visited Allens at Carlisle and they confirmed this and also said the repros are a lot less restrictive; more power:)
The originals could be described as more mellow.

--------I put Stainless Works sidepipes on Jans 66 after I figured I would never show the car for points again and I would swear the sound is close to original, however Jan says its quite a bit louder. They are staying on as the performance felt like about a 25/30hp bump!..................Bill S
