    Radiator Caps (Again)

First, let me thank those who stopped by at Carlisle and brought those original caps. I did pick up a lot of good info and details about what needs to be done. Right now I am focused on reproducing the RC26 and RC15 correctly. Others may follow later.
What I could use now is copies of the current NCRS judging standards on caps. I don't want to have to purchase a judging manual for each year just to get a couple pages. I know the manuals have details and manuals drawings of what the caps should look like.
If anyone wants to help, please photocopy the cap pages and either mail them or fax them to me. I'm interested in all years, but mainly 55-72.
My fax is 810-220-0182 or snail mail 11672 Hyne Rd Brighton Mi 48114
    Thanks again!

Tom I had all the pictures on two sheets of paper and they should be in your fax. I belive this is all the pictures of caps in all manuals. I use them when hunting the old yards for parts. Lyle

          Text from 66 JG

          Tom,

The latest, 4th edition of the 1966 JG does not contain a picture. The entire text is:

          Expansion Tank or Radiator Cap

Small block expansion tanks use an AC model RC-26 cap rated at 15psi. The rivet and sealing ring are aluminum.

Big block radiators use an AC model RC-15 cap with a brass rivet and sealing ring rated at 15 psi.

That's it. Not much to go on.

          Gary

            Re: Text from 70-72 JG

I suspect that going by the Judging Guides will be moderately futile. Even the pictures I've seen are only line drawings, and do not describe all the subtleties of the caps and/or the differences between originals and available reproductions. I have the current 70-72 manual in front of me, and no such distinctions are made. There is some description of the current service replacement.

As noted previously, it is an area where the knowledge of the judge comes into play.

              Re: Text from JG

As a general rule of thumb judging guides will only describe the original part. It is futile to try to describe the available reproduction part because:
              a) there may be more reproductions than the authors are aware of
              b) configuration of reproductions can change with new parts being introduced

                Re: Text from JG

I think the pictures in the JG will help in getting the correct look and numbers as I use it in the salvage yard but will be little help in the fine points as to how original the cap may be. As the hobby has grown and more judges think they know how something that was mass produced was made exactly and they may forget about die wear and production flaws. We need to temper our deductions in relation to points alloted and the quality of the part we are judging good or bad. Lyle

                  Tom,
I don't have anything to add in your research but do appreciate your efforts. I purchased a radiator, cap and recovery tank at Bloomington and also talked to you at the GM Tech Center show and found you to be a honest and honorable man. Keep up the great work, your products are everything they are said to be and more!
                  Regards,
                  Rick
