M-21 JUMPS OUT OF 2ND GEAR

The transmission in my car is original. It jumps out of 2nd gear when you let up on the gas.It doesn't do it all the time. Most freqently when it is hot, but not always then either. It seems like I read a post on this quite some time ago but didn't pay much attention as mine didn't do it then. This is something fairly new. Any ideas as to what needs to be done? Thanks in advance.

most likely the 2nd gear synchronizer which will require removal and repairof the muncie.. long shot is misaligned shifter rods, especially long shot if you've not had them removed . mike

Check for excessive play in the centerplate bearing as well as failure of the clip that retains the bearing on the shaft. Although common in the T-10, it is unusual to see this problem in a muncie unless it has been badly abused or has a problem in the center bearing area. One other item to check is worn shift forks.

        Tom,
If you decide to pull the M-21, get a set of "Torque-Lock Sliders" for the rebuild. It will eliminate the jumping out of gear problem in worn muncies.

          Agree on "Torque-Lock Sliders"

Had that recommended and done to 2 T-10's that wouldn't stay in 2nd on hard deceleration. That absolutely cured the problem.

              Re: Agree on "Torque-Lock Sliders"

Torque loc is a new design slider that has a small bac cut on the engagement teeth to help retain the contact between the slider and the engagement teeth on the gear. They can be helpful if the teeth on the gear are worn, but not too badly. Seldom a problem on second in a Muncie, but not a big cost over a standard slider if one has to be replace. Teh bottom line is the trans needs to come apart, get examined with respect to general condition of all parts and special attention to parts involved in the problem, and decisions made as to what gets replaced.

I would be looking at the shift forks when you bust it apart.

                  Bill a couple of questions.

Would linkage adjustment help this out?

Would a sloppy shifter do this?

Usually linkage that has at least a functional neutral gate will not cause a problem like this, as the side cover design on the muncie tends to lock the trans into the selected gear position. Of course there is sloppy and then there is...
