c3 71 part numbers and question

    To all,

Where is the part number located on a T-Top? Are the numbers different from 68-72?

Also, had to replace headlights. Notice that the outside light cover had different screws between the passenger side and driver(which tells me they were off before but already knew that as 3 of 4 lights were not original T-3's). Can I get the original screw kits for a 71 anymore(not just lights but anything!) and if so, where?

    Thanks

    Peter

    Peter:

You would need to remove the inside headliner from the top. There are 4 plastic velcro like fasteners attached to each piece (headliner & t-top panel), separate these carefully, as the fasteners on the headliner side are riveted to a fiberboard, which is not as sturdy as the fasteners attached to the fiberglass top side. Also there are phillip head screws holding a metal clip that keeps the headliner attached to the fiberglass top as well.

The part no# and I believe a casting date can be seen molded into the inside of the fiberglass top panels.

Some screw kits for the interior are available from most Corvette parts venders. Don't know if the retaining screws for the headlight covers are available. You could probably find all that you are looking for at the Corvette Expo in Knoxville in October if enough new parts venders and used parts sellers attend.

Peter, a T-top assembly is many part numbers...fiberglass shell, latches, trim. In any event, if you need a T-top, original part numbers are not going to help you much these days. The parts are probably discontinued by GM, larger vendors selling NOS parts use their own stock numbers, and vendors selling used parts refer to them by their description.

The best solution is to buy a used T-top assembly from a swap meet vendor. Unfortunately, Carlisle is just passed. I think you will be fairly safe using a 70-72 T-top; I can't say if 68-69 T-tops are identical in the details to later T-tops. Used part vendors MAY know that there are differences, if any, but your best bet is to be informed about the part you want.

Just got through looking through a new Corvette catalog from Mid America that came in the mail this morning. They have screws (8) for the headlight bezels listed under #601-451.

Read the TIM & JG for the description of the headlamp bezel screws. Some of the repro screw sets are not totally correct. I cannot tell you who does and who does not have the correct ones. I have not done one of these cars in a few years

Dick My copy of the JG gives no description of the screws. So the question is did they have washers on the outer screws or not. I will vote for washers today but may change my mind in time. Lyle

Washers??!! My 70 AIM shows no washers. Are these the four screws that retain the headlight door bezel? If so, there are two types of screws used; the side screws are PN 9416444 and the two front screws are PN 9427748.

My memory is telling me that the two on the sides were Phillips drive, counter-sinking sheet metal screws (pointed, coarse thread for U-nut) with crown heads. (The AIM also seems to illustrate the counter-sink in the bezel.) The two screws in the front were similar, but were self-tapping screws that threaded into bosses under the door edge. I think the two side screws were chrome plated, but I would confirm that before betting.

Most of the screw kits have a countersunk washer with the side screws, but I think this is incorrect. They are chome thought. Thanks for the part number on the two small front screws, Chuck. I am in need of those.

Lyle, are you admitting to having NCRS disease (never can remember squat)? That is the worst of all Corvette diseases.

'68-69 tops use different weatherstriping. I cannot speak for the differences, if any, of the actual top assembly. I believe that '70 to early '77 tops were the same. That is when another weatherstrip change was made. The later tops may interchange, but I am not sure
