62 crossover pipe needs to be cut?

Just installed the front exhaust pipes. It looks like the RH crossover pipe (male) needs to have about 2.5" cut off on one side to get the right length. Before I cut is this what others had to do? Pipe set came from Allen's.

Also I noticed that the RH front pipe hangs down quite a bit more than the LH front pipe due to the heat riser valve. I would have thought there would have been some kind of spacer on the LH side or a shorter down pipe on the RH side. However both pipes fit fine the way they are, one just hangs down further at the front. Normal?

    thanks, Chris

    Chris,

In regards to cutting the right hand pipe; I don't have a '62 but, it just seems logical that if the pipe is too long, you just go ahead and shorten it as needed.

As far as the right hand pipe coming down farther than the left; our '69 BB with the heat riser baffle, it is lower than the righthand side. The "General" and other automotive manufacturers as well just did not add the cost of a short "spacer" on the lefthand side just to make it more asthetically pleasing to look at. A buck here or a buck there over a few 100,000 to a million and your talking some real money!

    Just my 2 cents worth.

I also bought front header pipes from Allen for my '62. I forget whether I had to cut the crossover pipes. But this rings a bell. Call Allen and ask him. I also forget whether one side hung down lower than the other. Are the nipples for the crossover pipes in the same plane? I do remember that the crossover pipe, when installed, was parallel to the ground.

The driver side nipple is quite a bit higher. I have called allen's and they say they do not need to be cut. I measure 19" from nipple to nipple centers and the crossover pipe measures 21.25". I sent them some photos and awaiting response. I am happy to cut but something just does not seem right. If I did cut they still would not be paraallel to the ground.
