I am taking the iron glide out of the 57 and installing an aluminum early 60's tranny. Will the 62 style shifter work for me?

Yes--you'll need the rubber boot with the notch for the shifter, and you'll probably want to use the shift plate (the housing the encompasses the boot and the ash tray) from the 4-speed 58-62 type. It has a larger opening in that area than did the early ones. The early ones have rounded corners on the corners closest to the seats--the later ones have radiused corners--that's really the only difference besides the larger opening. They mount identibally. -

Just as an additional thought. You can buy a HURST shifter for your tranny, then buy one of the REPLICA handles (such as sold by Corvette Central) that looks kike a 57 4sp handle and retain the looks of a 57 shifter but the solid shifting of a HURST. This will allow you to retain the 56-58 style shifter plate/boot rather than switch to the 59-62 style.Comment

And I think you're right. When he said he wanted to install a later ALUM tranny, I just naturally thought he meant an alum 4sp. I have no knowledge of auto trannys----------------------AND HAVE NO DESIRE TO LEARN-------------ESPECIALLY IN A VETTE!!!!Comment
