    68 windshield identification.

I stumbled across a 68 windshield dated TX. I noted that it says E-Z-Eye on it above the Soft Ray and LOF. I don't believe that is mentioned in the NCRS judging manual. At least I can't find it in there. I am always looking for a 68 windshield dated before May of 68

    Thanks, Terry

    Terry

My July 18 built 68 has a UX windshield. It is not tinted or shaded. That's all it says. Also, the JG is confusing when it talks about the "AS1" mark. I have looked at a lot of cars and I believe that is only used on shaded glass. What do you think about that?

On another note, I said I would let you know where my washers hit the windshield (I have the slightly curved up tubes). Well, the pump clicks, but nothing comes out, so the answer will have to wait till that gets fixed!

Your squirters might be plugged. Are both your squirters L-shaped? One of mine was L-shaped and the other was straight??? I saw another like this also but I have also seen others with both L-shape. The assembly manual I have shows them L-shaped.

I was told that all front windshields on 68 were suposed to be tinted and that side windows were optioned with regard to tinting or not. The glass I have is tinted and has the little AS 1 or something like that on it.

Maybe someone else will comment. Terry

        Re: 68 windshield identification.

TIM & JG states "LOF Safety Plate is used on all 1968 and 1969 windshields. The windshields may be either tinted (Shaded Soft Ray) or non-tinted. "ASI" script is on the upper passenger's side of the tinted windshields. It is screened in white between the lamination of the glass, not sandblasted on the surface. No Safety Float glass was used in 1968 or 1969".

I hope this answers your question

Dick, have you ever heard that tinted glass was only used in airconditioned cars? Was tinted glass ever attached to other options so that you could only get a particular option by buying it as a group of options? Thanks, Terry

At least as early as 66 (not sure prior to that), if you ordered C60 (air conditioning) on a full-size Chevy, you got A01 (tinted glass all windows) as part of the package. I would bet that Corvettes also got the tinted glass as part of the C60 package. It reduced the heat load on the air conditioning system.

I don't know of any other "convenience group" options that included tinted glass. During that time, Chevrolet offered "convenience group" options on the full size Chevys, but I have never seen these listed as Corvette options. On the C6, you can get the 1SA package or the 1SB package; the difference is several options, some of which are useless in the southland (heated seats and mirrors??!! What tuh...??!!) If you want the Bose premium sound system, you have to get the fanny warmers whether you want/need them or not!

              New use for fanny warmers

Golf outings....the kind where you play 36 holes a day for 4 days straight. Those fanny warmers are great for sore backs!!!

                Documented '67 w/ A/C and non-tinted glass

If anyone believes that tinted glass was included in the C60 option, they are incorrect, at least for 1967 roadsters. I have a very well documental example that was ordered with C60 and without any tinted glass. This may only apply to 1967, not earlier or later models.

In coupes, if my memory serves, there were tinted rear windows as standard without option for non-tint. Someone more knowledgable in those will have to confirm that. But, your question was about windshields.

My washer squirters are pretty straight. Curved up slightly like the rocker on a chair. Both the same.

My 68 has non tinted, non shaded glass. It has the AS1 logo in the same spot as the lof logo with the date code. My 66 has a shaded windshield and it has an additional AS1 mark just below the shading with an arrow pointing down. I have seen shaded windshields on C3's with the same additional AS1 mark.

                    I'm probably incorrect...again...among other things.

I thought I remembered ordering my 66 Impala with C60 and having A01 as part of the package. I suppose that means I also ordered the tinted glass separately because it definitely had tinted glass. I beginning to wish I was as smart now as I was then...forget about being able to remember how smart I was then.

Anyway, tinted glass became standard on Corvettes in 1970 regardless of being airconditioned or not.

Beginning in 1968 (IIRC) the federal government required the AS1 mark on windshields with the dark shading at the top. Someplace I read those federal regulations, but I can't recall now where it was. I'm also sure I dozed off while reading them.
