Last weekend I went to go for a drive and found a dead battery. Being in a hurry, I started the car with the "engine start" function of my battery charger. It clicked a couple of times, kicked in and started fine. I went for my drive and stopped a few times along the way - started right up after each shut down with no problem. Yesterday, I went to drive the car and the battery is dead. Engine start function won't start it up - all I got was chatter from the starter. I pulled the battery and had it tested at a local parts store - the machine says it's good. Pulled the starter and the store swapped it for a new one under its lifetime warranty. Put everything back together this am, and still no start. I tried first with just the battery (I fully charged it yesterday). When I opend the door, the courtesy light went on. Tried to start it - one click and nothing. Open the door to get out, no interior lights. I hooked up the charger, put it on engine start, wait a couple of minutes, get in, interior lights go on, try to turn it over, and the starter just chatters. I'm stumped. Any thoughts?

Re: Starter/Electrical Problem
check ground wire on bellhousing. clean both battery cables on each end. check continuity of the ignition harness where it plugs into the fuse panel below master cylinder. pull ingition switch , dissassemble and clean the contacts of the ignition switch. good luck, mike- Top

Re: Starter/Electrical Problem
The starter is energized by the purple wire from the ignition switch, which goes through the fuse block and the inboard multiple connector below the master cylinder, and has another in-line connector in the area above the wiper motor before it gets to the starter. Check each of those connectors and terminals for corrosion or looseness to ensure continuity from the ignition switch to the terminal on the starter solenoid. If you have a Powerglide, also check the neutral safety switch for continuity/corrosion. If you haven't done it already, check and clean both ends of both battery cable connections.- Top

Re: Starter/Electrical Problem
Would also help to let us know what year car we're talking about here.... On Shark cars ('68 and later), the ignition circuit is protected by a fusible link wrapped inside the wiring harness at the starter motor position). When an aged fusible link starts to go 'flakey' a NUMBER of things happen including symptoms you describe: Jeckyl/Hyde starter operation, COMPLETE loss of interior electrical, Etc....- Top
