    right part

Okay after reading the thread by Jack on mid-year parts I have a question. Thought I got a bargan at Carlisle but now I'm not sure. Picked up a RH vertical ign shield in a GM box. Part tag shows 1#3794444, Below that it has the following : GR. 9.663, The tag is Genuine GM Parts. I unwraped the faded brown newspaper it was packaged in and the paper was dated 1970. The shield is beautiful with a few isolated spots where the underplating color is showing(gold). The part also feels heavier than some of the repo parts I handled at some of the venders. I picked it up at a vendor that had piles of used parts as well as old boxes like the one I bought. I thought they had purchased the item from a dealer inventory a long time ago.
So would this be correct for a 1964 327/300hp?
Would this be considered a NOS or a NORS part?
At least the price seemed correct... $35.00 ( thinner repo was 38.50)

NORS(1970 mfg approx. date). price was right. tough to say it's correct for a 64 300 hp vette without seeing it . comapre it to known originals in your area of the country if possible. or put it on and have it judged. good luck, mike

      Re: right part

Steve: Based on my parts book , the part # 3794444 is a RH lower ignition shield for 63-64 corvette. If the part you purchased is in fact what the tag or box says it is, it should be correct for your '64. List price was $17.50 back in 1982. Len

        Steve-----

GM #3794444 is the correct part number for the right side vertical ignition shield for a 1964 Corvette with U-69. It's hard to say whether there may be differences bewteen the original shield installed on the car and this piece. The wrapping paper would indicate that the part was manufactured in 1970 or earlier, but there's obviously no way to tell how much earlier.

Parts of the original part number may change in certain ways over the years of their manufacture. Some of the ways are non-engineering, such as tooling wear and ID mark differences. Other changes may involve an engineering change to the specifications for that particular part number.

As the Good Doctor Rebuild (aka The King of Cork) has often stated, the ONLY parts which are original to a particualr car are the parts originally installed on that car. ALL other parts are REPLACEMENTS. If one doesn't have the known original part, there is absolutely NO WAY to determine, for certain, how the original part was configured with respect to every, single nuance of detail. The exact, original configuration of the part can be INFERRED from known-original parts from cars built about the same time as the particular car in question. While that may be a very strong INFERRENCE as to how the same part on another car was configured, it has to be understood that this is an INFERRENCE ONLY. NO TWO PARTS are absolutely identical with respect to every nuance of detail.
