    C3 hardtop restoration

C3 hardtops have a stainless molding across the front edge that includes an integral, rubber-like strip that is not shown in the assembly manual. It is clearly not weatherstripping nor is it sealer strip. This mystery piece on mine has some damage to its surface and is missing about 3 inches off one end. Does anyone know if it is crucial for good sealing when the top is on; and if so can it be found anywhere? In the alternative, does anyone have any ideas about a suitable alternative, since it is not visible when the top is latched down? Any ideas greatly appreciated!

    T-tops Have The Same Feature...

    George,

I didn't know the hardtops also had this rubber sealing strip.

Since the stainless molding is like a "U" pressed onto the front edge of the fiberglass, I believe the rubber strip is to prevent water from running off the roof, flowing under the top edge of the "U", and accumulating until it runs out the bottom side of the molding. As I recall, the front edge of the tops hang out over the windshield molding slighty such that any leakage would appear to drip harmlessly on the windshield moldings.

HOWEVER, believeing that the General's engineers had reasons for all design, I plan to inspect mine closely before re-installation on the freshly painted T-tops, and I may augment the old, brittle rubber seal with a fine "worm" of strip seal caulk. I believe that the General could have used sealing caulk originally, but it would have been tedious on the assembly line and would have exacerbated removal and preservation of the molding in the field; the resiliency (if any) of the rubber seal may also help hold this simple, clipless molding in place.
