Actually if the media captured me, held me as a POW, and tortured me by forcing me to read either the LA Times or NY Times (I guess I could even throw in the Washington Post to this cabal.), I would select the LA Times as the lesser of evils, but I would refuse to sign a "confession" that any of these rags is unbiased or even if their reporters and editors are professionally competent.

I can't speak for any of "publications" you mention as I've not read them. I can say that I stopped believing anything presented by the media that can be even remotely linked to a political agenda.

Ethical Journalism no longer exists in our country (or the world for that matter). The sad part is nobody seems to care.

Say anything you want...who needs reliable sources or proof? All under the protections provided the Press under the 1st amendment.

            God help us...

I have read all three and basically agree with you. The nearest thing to objective reporting today would probably be the Wall Street Times. Most of the time they do not sugar coat what they report.

"Wall Street Times" must be a compendium of The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Times? Those are two of the better papers than I know of.

                  All,

In Europe, or at least the Netherlands, older cars get checked against the polution and emition regulations of the year the car was born which means older cars have automaticly less tight regulation enforced on them (and real old cars don't have any polution regulation enforced at all since they weren't in place long time ago).

Is the new law proposed in CA stating the same or is it enforcing all 30 year old cars (or younger) to comply to the laws of today ?

I think our legislation is not to bad. If your car is in original state it should automaticly comply to our laws.

                  greetings,
                  Rob.

Had too much "Times" on the brain. Journal I meant. Can't make red faced smileys.

i can't speak for the netherlands except to say that my overall impression is that legislation there is more populist and progressive. what people are saying about this bill is that they do not trust the state government to keep its word about the 1976 cutoff. i agree completely. the people that make that promise today may not be in office next year to keep it, and then who knows what. or, rob, to put it differently: the federal income tax was specifically excluded from the original constitution of the united states. however, around 1907, the government convinced the people to legalise a very limited tax of 1% of earned income above $50,000 [in 1907 dollars-about $1,000,000 today]] with some sort of agreement that this tax would only apply to the "rich." well rob....the rest as they say, is history.

                        Re: Hey Duke

Governmental promises aren't worth the paper they are printed on. The CA legislature promised us a 30 year rolling exemption in 1997, and now they are reneging by trying to eliminate it for post-'75 vehicles.

Emission standards are established by year group, but there is no direct correlation to the original certification standards and they keep tightening them.

Re: Hey Duke, No News Today

Just checked the governors legislative actions today as of 9/15/04. Nothing yet on AB 2683, but we are starting to see some serious veto-ing.

You can check the daily action at:

or go to the governor's site press releases if the above doesn't work.

Yes, I am very pleased to see the governor wield his veto power.

If you are a CA resident, go to www.governor.ca.gov then click on press room and press releases and browse some of these bills. Then ask yourself: Do we need Sacramento to micromanage society and our individual lives as they are doing now? What bills have your state legislators sponsored, and how did they vote on issues that are important to you?

We sent Arnold Schwarzenegger to Sacramento last year to reel in this out of control legislature and state bureaucracy. He is doing a good job, but he needs all the help he can get, so let's help him out as much as we can in November.
